Relation between intraventricular pressure and volume in diastole.

The pressure-volume curves for 10 patients with various types of heart disease were studied throughout mid to late diastole when both pressure and volume were increasing. The results were used to test a currently held theory that the form of this relation is exponential. It was found that for the patients examined this hypothesis was not valid.

Relation of negative intraventricular pressure to ventricular volume.

Elastic forces of the ventricular walls produce a subatmospheric (negative transmural) pressure in the empty quiescent ventricle of open chest dogs. As fluid is added to the ventricle the negative intraventricular transmural pressures become 0 and finally positive. The resulting ventricular pressure-volume curves are S-shaped, having one limb in the negative and another in the positive pressure...

Transmitral pressure-flow velocity relation. Importance of regional pressure gradients in the left ventricle during diastole.

Effects of regional diastolic pressure differences within the left ventricle on the measured transmitral pressure-flow relation were determined by simultaneous micromanometric left atrial (LAP) and left ventricular pressure (LVP) measurements, and Doppler echocardiograms in 11 anesthetized, closed-chest dogs. Intraventricular pressure recordings at sites that were 2, 4, and 6 cm from the apex w...

Independence of myocardial oxygen consumption from pressure-volume trajectory during diastole in canine left ventricle.

We have found that myocardial oxygen consumption is linearly correlated with the systolic pressure-volume area in the canine left ventricle. This pressure-volume area is a specific area in the pressure-volume diagram that is circumscribed by the end-systolic pressure-volume relation line, the end-diastolic pressure-volume relation curve, and the systolic segment of the pressure-volume trajector...

Relation between maximum time-varying elastance pressure-volume areas and myocardial oxygen consumption in dogs.

To establish whether pressure-volume areas (PVAs) calculated using the maximum time-varying elastance (Emax) have a relation with myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) that improves on other indexes of myocardial oxygen demand, we studied nine dogs of either sex weighing 19-39 kg, which were instrumented with a micromanometer left ventricular (LV) catheter and a Wilton-Webster coronary sinus flo...
